In fiber arts, “off-loom” structures are made without the aid of a loom. The techniques include paper-making, coiling, felting, knitting, and crochet. In contrast, the more conventional surface supports used in painting are canvas and linen, which are themselves woven using a loom.
These off-loom paintings are made by pouring long strips of liquid paint onto plastic dropsheets. Once dry, the paint is peeled away and manipulated like yarn to create new modes of sculptural abstraction within the context of painting. By removing the traditional woven canvas altogether a cohesive whole emerges in which surface and support function as one singular entity.
