Industrial-Woven Jacquard Cloth; Rayon Warp & Weft; Neon Lights, Arduino Due, Computer & Project Website
China Design Museum (now part of their permanent collection)
This 50-yard weaving stores 19 encrypted files inside the structures of the cloth, in the same manner as a USB flash drive. Exhibited at the 2019 Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in China, this project questions the conventions around how and why we store data.
A computer exhibited alongside the installation demonstrated how files were converted into cloth and encouraged viewers to submit messages to an archive for a future textile.
Installation View
-
The neon lights blink private key numbers in morse code periodically over the course of the exhibition. These numbers are needed to decrypt the information that has been hard coded and stored into the structure of the cloth.
Installation View Showing Interactive Website
-
The website was set up as an interactive component, encouraging viewers to submit encrypted messages to the data base over the course of the exhibition. Upon submitting a message to the site, one copy of their encrypted message was stored on the backend of the site and one copy was printed out as a receipt for viewers to take.
